Success for South African participation at CAMX, Dallas, USA

The South African flag flew high during October at this year's Composites Advanced Materials Exhibition (CAMX) which took place in Dallas, United States of America!

With funding and organisation coming from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the South African industry was able to stamp their mark at the exhibition when 7 local composite companies exhibited and demonstrated their products and capabilities. This exhibition attracts people from all parts of the world and great interest was shown as South Africa, with a large untapped composite market, had not been considered as a trade partner before by many of the delegates. Awareness of our export markets have been limited which has resulted in local companies losing out on trade opportunities. With the vast experience of local composite companies and the current exchange rates, South Africa should be in a position to land export deals without any problems.

Appreciation is extended to the Department of Trade and Industry for making this pavilion possible.

Ashland Introduces Low Styrene Resins While Maintaining Performance and Manufacturing Needs

Ashland Performance Materials, a commercial unit of Ashland Inc. (NYSE: ASH), works with the best boat builders in the world providing them with new technologies for decades that deliver unmatched quality and performance. Ashland's newest product captures the latest trends and needs for high-performance boats.

Aropol L 67314 resins deliver a noticeable reduction in the styrene odor and improved cosmetics over standard general purpose marine resins.

"Ashland's technical service team has an industry-leading reputation for solving problems. We work closely with our customers to understand specific application challenges so we can recommend the best product to meet their business objectives," said Charlie Fisher, Recreational Markets Product Manager for Ashland. "Our latest Aropol product delivers against an unmet need of the market. The resin achieves the desired appearance and process times while meeting current and future regulatory standards."

Standard lab styrene tests show that Aropol L 67314 resins helped reduce emissions by 30 percent. Due to lower styrene content of the resin, much reduced styrene emissions are expected

Emission prevention and reduction in the workplace, health concerns about styrene, and air quality standards are fundamental drivers for governmental regulatory agencies to demand lower styrene in composites manufacturing. Ashland has created a low styrene resin that can minimize exposure to styrene vapors thus creating a more pleasant, safer workplace.

Ashland celebrates 50 years of Derakane success

For 50 years, Ashland's Derakane resins have defined the standard of excellence in corrosion-resistant fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) applications for chemical processing, water treatment and air pollution control, mineral processing and more.

Invented in 1965 for use in extremely corrosive, hot, wet chlorine environments, Derakane was originally targeted toward the pulp bleaching and waste water markets. Today, through continued technology development, Derakane is used in hundreds of critical applications, where exceptional mechanical properties and corrosion resistance at high temperatures are required. Because of the high resistance to aggressive solvents and chemicals, Derakane can also maintain good retention of strength and toughness even at elevated temperatures, and the resins have excellent resistance to acidic oxidizing environments.

Ashland Inc. board of directors elects William A. Wulfsohn as chairman and chief executive officer

President and CEO of Carpenter Technology to succeed retiring Jim O'Brien effective January 1, 2015; Wulfsohn brings nearly 30 years of global chemicals and industrial experience

Covington, Ky., Nov. 14, 2014 - Ashland Inc. (NYSE: ASH) today announced its board of directors has moved forward with its ongoing integrated succession and strategic plan by electing William A. Wulfsohn as the company's new chairman and chief executive officer, effective January 1, 2015. He succeeds James J. O'Brien, who earlier this year announced plans to retire at the end of December after serving 12 successful years as chairman and CEO.

Wulfsohn, 52, brings nearly 30 years of world-class chemicals and industrial manufacturing experience to his new role with Ashland. Since 2010, he has served as president and CEO of Carpenter Technology Corp. (NYSE: CRS), a global leader in the development, manufacture and distribution of cast/wrought and powder metal stainless steels and specialty alloys used in aerospace, energy, medical, transportation, consumer and industrial products. He also has served on Carpenter's board since 2009. Wulfsohn has led Carpenter's senior management team through a major transformation, revitalizing the company's capabilities and delivering outstanding results. Under his leadership, the company: constructed a highly advanced super alloy facility; expanded its scope of geographic operations; introduced new differential technology; and successfully integrated multiple accretive acquisitions. From fiscal 2010 through fiscal 2014, Carpenter Technology's annual sales grew 93 percent, operating margin improved from 5 percent to 13 percent, and fully diluted earnings per share increased from $0.04 to $2.47. In addition, adjusted EBITDA nearly tripled, from $132 million in 2010 to $382 million in 2014. The Ashland board was attracted by Wulfsohn's ability to deliver strong financial results through his focus on customer satisfaction, innovation and operational excellence.

Wulfsohn has enjoyed a long, proven career. After working for McKinsey & Co., he focused his career on specialty materials with leading companies such as Honeywell International, PPG Industries and Carpenter Technology. During his three years at Honeywell, he helped lead the nylon business through a strategic redesign. In 2003, he joined PPG and a year later was named managing director of PPG Europe, based in Paris. In 2006, Wulfsohn was promoted to senior vice president, industrial coatings, leading a $4 billion business segment and reporting to PPG's chairman and CEO. He has recently served on the board of directors of PolyOne (NYSE: POL), a premier provider of specialized polymer materials, services and solutions.

"Bill met or exceeded nearly every criteria we outlined for Ashland's new CEO," said Barry Perry, Ashland's lead director and chair of the board's Special Committee on CEO Succession. "Given Ashland's successful transformation, we strongly believe he is the right leader to build on the company's solid foundation and maximize the tremendous growth opportunities that lay ahead. Ashland has been fortunate to have had a high-performing CEO and a talented senior management team, which included several potential successors. Ultimately the board was attracted to Bill's impressive track record and a shared objective of creating even greater value for Ashland's shareholders."

Wulfsohn will be based at Ashland's corporate headquarters in Covington. An on-boarding process is under development to allow time for Wulfsohn and O'Brien to work together alongside other members of Ashland's senior management team and the board. In addition, Perry, a member of Ashland's board of directors since 2007, will work closely with Wulfsohn on his transition plan to ensure continued momentum and continuity of Ashland's ongoing transformational and strategic framework.

"It has been a privilege to lead Carpenter Technology through a period of dramatic growth and strategic repositioning," Wulfsohn said. "At the same time, Ashland's incredible transformation over the past decade has been exciting to watch. Although I was not actively seeking a new CEO role, I was attracted by the opportunity to lead a larger, well-run company with a reputation for delivering superior product innovation, unmatched technical expertise and market-beating shareholder value. The Ashland board also convinced me that they were interested in pursuing additional strategic growth opportunities in the global marketplace. I look forward to engaging quickly and directly with Ashland's employees, customers and investors. My objective is to sustain the core strengths that have driven the company's existing growth and work alongside the team and board to enhance the Company's operating and financial performance in the years ahead."

"Bill is inheriting a very different Ashland than when I assumed the role in 2002," said O'Brien. "His global experience within the specialty chemicals industry, combined with the insights and knowledge he has gained as CEO of a public company, will serve him well at Ashland. I look forward to working with Bill in the weeks ahead to ensure a smooth transition."

Wulfsohn earned a chemical engineering degree from the University of Michigan and received an MBA from Harvard Business School. He and his wife, Stephanie, have three daughters.

Ashland introduces two products for premium boatbuilders to enhance hull appearance through depth of color and functionality

New resins and gelcoats provide superior properties and value to manufacturers and boat owners

DUBLIN, Ohio - In the United States alone, manufacturers of recreational boats comprise a $6 billion industry. While the demand for new boats depends on growing consumer income, the profitability of individual companies is linked to manufacturing efficiencies and quality. Ashland Performance Materials, a commercial unit of Ashland Inc. (NYSE: ASH), is known for developing gelcoats that deliver ease-of-use and balanced properties. Ashland's commitment to technical service and problem-solving has resulted in the development of Aropol™ NLN 71800 INF infusion resins and Maxguard™ NCP Jet Black gelcoat. Both products are in response to helping the premium boat-building industry meet the high-quality boat owners' expect.

The extensive line of Aropol marine resins ensure Ashland can offer the ideal formulation to optimize boat-building operations. The newest Aropol product - Aropol NLN 71800 series resins are designed specifically for boatbuilders with fast cycle times that desire a Class A automotive, "glass like" surface profile in a close molding application. It leverages Ashland's state-of-the-art Neulon™ low profile technology which allows manufacturers to create surfaces once only possible with high temperatures, automotive type processes. The Aropol NLN 71800 series provides boatbuilders room temperature processing, good mechanical properties, and superior storage stability when compared to traditional low profile resins.

Continuously working to understand the needs and trends of the marine industry, Ashland is aware of how important color is to the consumer and boatbuilder alike. The latest color in the award-winning, premium-grade Maxguard gelcoat line is the Maxguard NCP Jet Black gelcoat. It provides an even deeper, richer black with superior depth of color while retaining the best all-around performance in this high-weathering marine gelcoat. Ashland's gelcoats have an outstanding reputation for exceptional repair properties and sprayability which can be found with the new deeper, rich black color.

"Ashland continues to innovate in the Marine market with the launch of these new products, and significant capital investments in its manufacturing facilities," said Charles Fisher, Product Manager for Ashland Performance Materials. "Our focus on continuous improvement keeps us well positioned as the market leader in marine gelcoats, barrier coats, and resins."

Ashland launches Arotran™ 770 TLM Series resins enabling production of lower-density Class A SMC parts

Rolling out as the right partner for the automotive industry, Ashland is addressing CAFE regulations with higher strengths and greater toughness

DUBLIN, Ohio - A recent U.S. Energy Information Administration report confirms what most Americans may already believe ? our dependence on gasoline will likely continue to decrease for several reasons. While the recession may have begun the current trend, consumers are also increasing their demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles. And, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's recently augmented Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard requirements have already spawned significant innovation in response. Composites research chemists at Ashland Performance Materials, a commercial unit of Ashland Inc. (NYSE:ASH), are among those leading the way with the newest, most differentiated technologies.

"One approach automotive producers are taking to meet CAFE standards is to design and produce lighter vehicles," explains Laura Gigas, product manager, Unsaturated Polyester Resins, Ashland Performance Materials. "In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Energy's Vehicle Technologies Office, a 10 percent reduction in vehicle weight can result in a 6 percent to 8 percent fuel-economy improvement. To this point, Mike Sumner, our group leader for SMC, Gelcoat, and Marine Resin and I will be making a presentation on September 1 at the SPE ACCE entitled 'Customer Driven Development of Low Density Class A SMC with Improved Mechanical Properties'."

"Lower-density sheet molding compounds (SMC) introduced in the recent past did not provide sufficient strength and toughness while still maintaining Class A finish required for use in exterior body panels," Sumner added. "Ashland has developed a 1.2 density Class A SMC material with higher physical properties including up to a 40 percent increase in flex and tensile strength and a 20 percent increase in modulus and elongation as compared to existing technology. The material also demonstrates increased substrate adhesion and impact resistance. Arotran™ 770 Tough Low-mass (TLM) Series resins will help engineers working for original equipment manufacturers meet both the regulatory and design parameters."

"The resins technologies we are providing to the automotive industry present a multitude of advantages versus both previous and alternative materials," explained Andy Beer, leader, Composites, North America, Ashland Performance Materials. "Ashland very much wants to partner with OEMs to deliver solutions for new applications that will assist them in fulfilling their needs as driven by the CAFE standards."

To learn more, visit Ashland at the upcoming Society of Plastic Engineers (SPE) Automotive and Composites Divisions' 2014 Automotive Composites Conference & Exposition (ACCE), booth #103-105 and follow us on Twitter. Ashland's presentation is on Wednesday September 10, from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. in the Granite/Gold/Copper Room of the Diamond Banquet & Conference Center at the Suburban Collection Showplace, 46100 Grand River Avenue, Novi, MI.

The conference, which is the world's leading automotive composites forum, runs September 9-11, 2014. It is designed to educate and update automotive design and production engineers, sales personnel, and management from transportation original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier suppliers about the benefits and expanding importance of thermoset and thermoplastic composites in passenger vehicles, light trucks and other ground transportation applications.

Soyad™ adhesives

Soyad adhesives are the system of choice for industry-leading manufacturers who want to stay ahead of formaldehyde regulations and help improve indoor air quality.

Interior wood products such as hardwood plywood, particleboard, medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and engineered wood flooring are manufactured with various types of adhesives, the most common of which is made from urea-formaldehyde (UF). Over time, UF releases free formaldehyde into the air, going from its solid form in the adhesive to a gaseous form that can be inhaled. Formaldehyde has been designated as a known carcinogen by a number of government and regulatory agencies around the world, and regulations have been enacted globally to reduce formaldehyde emissions from interior wood products.

The patented, water-based Soyad adhesive products are formulated with soy flour and a proprietary cross-linking resin. When blended together, the resin reacts with the protein in the soy flour to form a durable and water-resistant thermoset adhesive.

Ashland's formaldehyde-free Soyad adhesives are a cost-competitive alternative to other substitutes for UF-based adhesives.
